The Hussman Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate 2, SOM position. The incumbent contributes to the University’s research activities under the supervision of senior staff. Moreover, the incumbent understands, interprets, and complies with research policies and protocols.

JOB FUNCTIONS

• Performs specialized and complex experiments/studies.

• Participates in the publication of significant research results.

• Advances expertise through education, training, and research.

• Writes extramural grants/proposals to gain support when appropriate.

• Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens and tissue cultures.

• Weighs and anesthetizes laboratory animals for experiments.

• Operates sensitive and highly complex laboratory equipment.

• Performs calculations to complete research test results.

• Performs photography and dark room processing.

• Participates in training sessions and workshops.

• Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field.

• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience and two years of laboratory research preferred.

Department Specific Functions

• Excellent communicate, attention to detail and critical thinking skills

• Write, update and follow standard operating procedures

• Perform tasks with an attention to detail and a desire to achieve accurate results while minimizing human error and processing failures

• In addition to operating all standard lab equipment (centrifuges, thermocyclers, etc.), has a detailed working knowledge of specialized lab equipment such as Keyence all-in-one fluorescent microscope, BioRad CFX 96 Real Time System, EVOS fl auto 2.0 fluorescent imaging system, Sartorius Incucyte Zoom, etc.

• Expertise in derivation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from a variety of cell types, including peripheral blood mononuclear cells, dermal fibroblasts, and lymphoblastoid cells etc.

• Coordination of the iPSC validation by immunocytochemistry and qRT-PCR, as well as, working with commercial companies for the karyotype and single tandem repeat (STR) analyses.

• Teaching external clients of the iPSC core facility the basics of iPSC culture and maintenance and work with them to ensure the proper handling of the cells.

• Possesses the standard computational skills necessary to acquire proficiency in new software programs, cloud-based tools, online webforms and databases

• Analyzes data for quality and consistency and reports issues to supervisor

• Independently operate multiple highly specialized molecular genetics platforms, such as liquid handling automation, real time PCR platforms, fluorescent imaging systems, etc.

• Trains new laboratory personnel on various laboratory workflows

• Prepares reports on progress/trends and makes appropriate recommendations or conclusions to supervisor

• Tracks project progress and provides status updates to ensure that a given project moves through the pipeline in a timely and efficient manner

• Tracks and orders the reagents needed to complete all daily and complex laboratory tasks such that downtime and spending are minimalized

• Reviews laboratory methods, manuals, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments to aid in the design, development and execution of procedures and techniques

• Schedules meetings with company technical support and engineers to resolve experimental and hardware issues

• Ability to multitask across multiple complex and highly specialized molecular genetics platforms and protocols
