Job Title: VP, Global Head of Environment and Sustainability
Location: Lexington, Massachusetts or Zurich, Switzerland
The primary focus of this role will be to lead Takeda’s global environmental function encompassing compliance and sustainability.
- Leads global cross-functional team responsible for the development and implementation of Takeda’s environmental strategy addressing risks an opportunities related to climate, energy, water, waste, biodiversity, and product stewardship in line with Takeda’s environmental sustainability goals
- Directs team responsible for development and implementation of programs, standards and monitoring systems to ensure compliance, to manage and mitigate risk, and to continually improve performance of environmental and product stewardship functions
- Oversees Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) and sustainability content for related disclosures (e.g. CDP, DJSI, TCFD, Takeda’s Annual Report, etc.) and engages with functional leaders across the company to further integrate sustainability principles into Takeda’s culture and business
- Serves as Corporate EHS business partner for Global Engineering
How you will contribute:
- Oversees multi-functional teams responsible for the implementation of Takeda’s global environmental sustainability (Net Zero) and environmental compliance and risk programs
- Provides overall leadership to the Planet team responsible for achieving Takeda’s environmental sustainability ambitions related to Net-Zero GHG emissions, natural resource conservation, and sustainability by design.
- Manages and improves internal processes used to identify and mitigate environmental and product stewardship risks across the company (e.g. air emissions, wastewater, solid waste, environmental remediation, etc.)
- Oversees Takeda’s EHS Property Transfer Due Diligence program (e.g. divestments, acquisitions, close-out, etc.) ensuring adequate due diligence is performed while maintaining confidentiality
- Establishes collaborative relationships with key internal business partners such as Global Corporate Affairs, Global Engineering, Research and Development, Global Finance, and Strategy and Business Excellence as well as external stakeholders including environment agencies, partners and other sector associations on environment and product stewardship aspects (e.g. JPCL, PEG, PSCI environment, RE-100, etc.)
- Responsible for managing Takeda’s approach for environmental sustainability related disclosures including supporting processes related to data collection, consolidation, analysis, and external assurance
- Other duties as assigned
Technical/Functional (Line) Expertise:
- EHS Acumen: Possesses a deep knowledge of environmental and product stewardship standards, best practices, and laws and regulations. Able to translate this knowledge to actionable programs and communicate to all levels of the organization.
- Collaboration: Develops strong relationships at various levels working closely with sites and various internal teams, corporate EHS team members, and senior leaders from supporting functions.
- Execution: Balances strategic awareness and direction-setting with a focus on achieving consistent tactical results.
- Leadership & Communication: Develop and communicate a clear vision and strategy for environmental and product stewardship programs in alignment with Takeda’s goals. Provides leadership to teams across multiple sites including leading matrixed teams. Requires excellent interpersonal skills to communicate globally at all levels. Maintains positive working relationships externally with regulatory agencies and other key stakeholders as required.
Decision-making and Autonomy:
- Develops and recommends strategies to mange environmental and product stewardship risks and opportunities for the company. Makes recommendations around external disclosure to ratings agencies, NGOs, and other interested parties; Takeda environmental sustainability and product stewardship goals; engineering design input; and investment requirements to achieve Takeda’s goals. The incumbent may make the recommendation, but decisions are made within existing governance structures.
Interaction:
- Works with various teams across the operating unit, engineering, external supply, supply chain, legal, risk management, site leadership teams, etc. Develops technical standards for the company, interacts with relevant operating units, business units and other global functions to get feedback and alignment.
- Serves as the central point of contact for interfaces with third parties/organizations on the subject of environmental protection or performance, such as ORC, PEG or other.
- Build effective partnerships with external consultants and others to support processes and programs
- Engage with senior leadership across Corporate EHS; Global Real Estate, Facilities, and Procurement; Global Manufacturing and Supply; Global Engineering; Global Finance; Research and Development; and corporate Business Units to ensure program effectiveness
- Work with various teams across the operating unit, engineering, external supply, supply chain, site leadership teams, etc. Works closely the Corporate EHS to provide input to global standards, processes and IT tools, active participation in developing the EHS programs across the Company
Innovation:
- Responsible to know the laws and regulations in the various geographies where Takeda plants are operated. Overall knowledge of the process and the EHS risks of the process and products.
Complexity:
- Must be able to work in a complex, matrixed organization, managing priorities from site, network and corporate teams.
What you bring to Takeda:
- Degree in life sciences, engineering or similar field; 15+ years of experience in Pharmaceutical, Biopharmaceutical, or manufacturing; previous experience leading teams across multiple locations; experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, regulatory agencies and vendors; previous experience in program management and demonstrated application of environment, health and safety practices.
At least five years leading environmental sustainability efforts in a large company.

Base Salary Range: $240,000 - $343,000 . Employees may also be eligible for Short Term and Long-Term Incentive benefits. Employees are eligible to participate in Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, 401(k), Charitable Contribution Match, Holidays, Personal Days & Vacation, Tuition Reimbursement Program and Paid Volunteer Time Off.
