Description

QUALIFICATIONS 1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree required. 2. Valid State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse (RN) license required. 3. Valid Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction certification in the respective classification: (DPI Code 75 – School Nurse) preferred. 4. Experience working with school age children, including an ability to work with children who have disabilities and children with special health needs. 5. Experience in communicable disease control. 6. Effective written and verbal communication skills. 7. Knowledge of community resources available for health services. 8. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Share necessary health information with peers, students, family, staff, other professionals and the community. 2. Establish, review, and revise procedures for a comprehensive school health program in consultation with administration and the district health advisory committee. 3. Assist in selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of health assistants assigned to the school nurses. 4. Develop in-service programs for school personnel regarding health-related issues with primary focus upon prevention, as necessary, or upon request. 5. Establish and implement procedures to identify students having physical and related adjustment problems and make referrals to special education or Section 504 in a timely fashion. 6. Communicate health needs of students to parents, appropriate school personnel and outside agencies when appropriate. 7. Serve as a regular member of each school’s CARE Team to design intervention plans for students who are failing medically, socially, behaviorally, or academically. 8. Complete written reports, such as the students’ immunization records, as required in a timely fashion. 9. Assume responsibility for initiation of pupil health records upon enrollment and maintain complete records on students. 10. Provide written nursing care plans for students with significant health problems, monitor their implementation, and assure compliance in order to provide adequate health care. 11. Inform, monitor, and request adjustment in interventions, adaptations of the instructional programs as needed, or adjustments in environment required by students to meet their individual health needs. 12. Serve as an IEP team member on initial referrals for Other Health Impairment (OHI) and on other IEP teams when medical issues must be addressed to ensure educational benefit to the students. 13. Teach the principles of health promotion and disease prevention to individuals and groups, as needed or requested. 14. Act as a resource person in health education to school personnel, students, and families. 15. Participate in staff development opportunities to increase knowledge, update skills, and maintain certification. 16. Interpret school health service needs and the role of the school nurse to the school and community. 17. Collaborate with agencies within and outside of the community to assure continuity of health care services. 18. Recruit outside resources to assist the district in assessing and obtaining health care services to meet students’ needs. 19. Provide monthly and annual reports on health care needs and services provided to students (e.g. communicable diseases.) 20. Perform such other duties as may be determined by the administrative staff within the parameters of Board policies, state statutes, and administrative rules.
