Job Title: Train Laborer

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hours: Part-time

About the role:

This position will assist with the overall upkeep of the Omaha Zoo Railroad, Trams and Carousel. May be some work with the Skyfari when necessary. Helps to maintain equipment to operational standards. This position reports to the Rides Maintenance Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

• Will use all necessary hand and power tools to complete jobs.
• Assist with track work, involving tie removal and replacement; spiking; drilling of tie or rail; tamping, shoveling, and raking ballast; grinding; joint bar replacement; cutting etc.
• Able to assist with mechanical work on all rides.
• Grounds upkeep inclusive of the Railroad right-of-way. Involving trash pick-up, mowing, weeding, and tree trimming with removal of debris.
• Building custodial duties, toilet, sink, floors, shower room, windows, light bulbs, trash removal, batteries etc.
• Regular interaction with Zoos Guests.
• Cleaning of and assistance with mechanical upkeep of ALL related buildings.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must have a High School diploma or GED.
• Must have a flexible schedule, up to 40 hours a week during our peak season. Must be available to work some late nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must have excellent people skills as contact with public is frequent

Candidates might be (depending on position) required to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, negative skin tuberculosis test, and possess a valid drivers license with a good history.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

• Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends, holidays, and some nights.
• Must be able to walk long distances across the zoo.
• Required to stand, walk. use of hands; to finger, handle, signal, or feel. Reach with arms and hands. Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. Talk, and or hear.
• Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 80 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods.
• Must be able to coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Understand and respond to a diverse population.
• Work is performed in indoors and outdoors under all weather conditions.
