Position Information

Arlington County’s Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (JDR) is seeking to fill a Juvenile Probation Supervisor position in the Juvenile Probation Unit of the Court Services Unit. This is one of two positions that oversee a team of up to 7 probation officers who supervise young people in the community, prepare written case histories and recommendations to the Court, and interact with other caseworkers and stake holders serving youth. The Court Services Unit includes the JDR Court Intake, Juvenile and Adult Probation, and an array of community-based programs and services.

Specific duties include:


  • Directing, monitoring and guiding the management of juvenile probation cases to ensure high quality services and adherence to state regulations and evidence-based practices;
  • Assigning, organizing, prioritizing, and balancing caseloads;
  • Providing the court with verbal and written testimony and recommendations and reviewing those of probation counselors;
  • Reviewing juvenile social files, records, reports, supervision plans, documentation, and correspondence to ensure thoroughness, consistency, quality, and compliance with procedures;
  • Leading a Juvenile Unit in the implement of Effective Practices in Community Supervision (EPICS), motivational interviewing, risk assessment tools, and other evidence-based practices;
  • Fostering individual and team development within the unit and providing technical guidance to staff on new laws, standards, regulations, and/or procedures;
  • Maintaining confidentiality of all social and legal files and guiding others in proper handling of confidential client information;
  • Evaluating the work of professional and administrative staff members to promote high quality services, and the highest ethical and professional standards;
  • Participating in the development and revision of CSU policies and procedures;
  • Evaluating current programs and developing and implementing new programs and services to meet the changing needs of youth and families in the community;
  • Participating on interagency teams and committees;
  • Assisting in the hiring process by screening applications, conducting interviews, and completing reference checks; and
  • Training and onboarding of new staff.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and understanding of the Juvenile Justice System in Virginia as well as knowledge of local community resources, particularly those for adolescents and families related to substance use behavioral health needs.

Selection Criteria

Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or related field and three years of experience in probation, social work, crisis intervention, or family counseling within a legal/court/probation environment.

Substitution: Additional qualifying related experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following qualifications:


  • Master's Degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Education, Sociology, Public Administration, or related field;
  • Two years of supervisory experience in the juvenile or adult justice system; and/or
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Virginia Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court and legal system; and/or
  • Formal training and experience in leading and coaching the use of Motivational Interviewing, EPICS, or other evidence-based interventions for juvenile offenders.

Special Requirements

The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.


Additional Information

Work Hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with most work carried out in a private office.
