Description
The Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Adult Institutions operates 13 correctional facilities that house Kentucky's adult inmate population. The mission of DOC is to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth and to provide a safe, secure and humane environment for staff and offenders in carrying out the mandates of the legislative and judicial processes; and, to provide opportunities for offenders to acquire skills, which facilitate non-criminal behavior.

The Safety Administrator at Blackburn Correctional Complex is vital to the safety and security of the institution in contributing to a secure environment.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Develop, coordinate, and review safety and preventative measures at the institution to include the areas such as inmate housing, administrative offices, kitchen and dining, etc.
  • Conduct inspections of institutional structures, areas, and equipment on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance of all safety, fire, health, and sanitation regulations, codes, policies, and procedures.
  • Enforce fire and safety codes.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Conduct investigations of any accidents that arise on institutional grounds and report findings.
  • Provide recommendations to alleviate potential accidents.
  • Supervise correctional employees that are trained in Fire & Safety.
  • Provide training, oversight, & expertise in all aspects of the safety and health programs.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Five years of experience in area of safety operations or inspection, incident management, or emergency services.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Additional administrative, safety operations and/or inspection, incident management, or emergency services experience will substitute for the required college on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE
Working Conditions
Incumbent must be able to make oral presentations. Travel may be required.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
