Job Description

We are seeking a Medical Assistant . The Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being (SHWB) practice group supports well-being, primary care, and mental health services for JHU students and learners across all nine schools within the University. Our integrated service delivery model provides dynamic health and well-being promotion, support and programming, student disability services including guidance and resources, and in-person primary and mental health care options at our clinics as well as remote support through phone and online resources.

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is a full-time position in the Homewood office with a requirement for availability to travel to other Baltimore area campuses and to the DC campus for service delivery and in-person meetings, when necessary. This may include being available on evenings and weekends for extended clinic hours, outreach programs and crisis or emergency response.

The CMA works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team to optimize patient outcomes and is responsible for providing comprehensive and age appropriate primary care to the students/learners of Johns Hopkins University.

This is a 1.0 FTE full-time non-exempt position, reporting directly to the Nurse Supervisor.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Obtain patients complete vital signs, including smoking history, and note allergies in electronic health record (EHR).
Perform height & weight measurements, audiometer testing, visual acuity testing, etc. as necessary with documentation in the EHR.
Obtain all specimens including venipuncture for lab tests ordered by clinicians.
Perform in house laboratory tests (Monospot, urine dip, rapid strep, urine pregnancy, finger stick glucose, Influenza A & B, COVID-19, and hemoglobin, etc.) as protocol indicates and ordered by clinicians.
Prepare lab specimens and accurately complete forms for transport.
Chaperone the clinicians during female gynecological exams, breast exams, and male genital exams.
Perform injections as ordered by the clinician and utilize the computer system for documentation.
Perform IVs as ordered by clinicians.
Perform EKGs as ordered by clinicians.
Perform crutch fitting, dressing changes, nebulization treatments, ear irrigation, and orthostatic vitals as ordered by the clinicians.
Call parking office or security office for patient transportation when needed.
Provide first aid as necessary.
Document any service rendered to a patient in the EHR.
Inventory, order, stock and continue condom program at Student Health & Wellness Center (SHWC).
Prepare Travel Packages for clinicians.
Inspect, clean, and stock supplies in clinicians exam rooms, Observation Room and Procedure Room.
Perform laboratory quality control procedures for opening the SHWC when necessary.
Stock the restrooms with supplies.
Prepare Tylenol/ibuprofen packets.
Keep inventory and prepare Cold Care Kits.
Perform PAPRS check monthly.
Open active supply room.
Turn on pharmacy and observation room computer.
Take down and install curtains for laundering.
Adhere to standard precautions for infection control.
Assist in biohazard waste removal from Lab and Observation room when necessary.
Prepare SHWC for closing on a daily basis.
Attend monthly Staff Meeting, participate in SHWB PC committees, attend SHWB educational programs and show evidence of continued self-development and professional involvement by participating in activities and educational programs of your professional organization.
Share the responsibility for ongoing assessment of quality and efficiency of patient care services.
Continually monitor patient flow in the waiting areas.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Special knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The successful candidate should have experience working with diverse patient populations and appreciate and relate effectively to individuals who hold multiple, intersecting identities including but not limited to, historically marginalized and under-represented populations, various ages and developmental status, cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, international status, disability, gender and sexual identities and presentations.
Knowledge of Microsoft Word and facility in emails is required.

Must successfully complete all required and on-going electronic medical records training as directed. Must complete all required HIPAA, and any other specified online training courses deemed necessary.

Work effectively in a team-oriented service program.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and non-verbally in order to function as a team member.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
Stooping and bending.
Communication skills using the spoken word.
Ability to see within normal parameters.
Ability to hear within normal range.
Possible exposure to communicable diseases.

Additional Information

Starting Date: July 2023
Occasional evening hours until 6:30 pm and occasional Saturday clinic approximately one/month; subject to change as clinic needs change, not to exceed 37.5 hours/week.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED and certification/registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, NAHP) required.
Current CPR certification required. Must maintain MA and CPR certification/registration during employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience using EPIC preferred.

Certification/Registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, NAHP) required. If not currently certified/registered, must become certified/ registered within 180 days (6 months) of date of hire. Exam fees will be paid by the department. If a retest is required, associated fees are paid by the employee.
Current CPR certification by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross required.
Must maintain MA and CPR certification/registration during duration of employment in this position.
