Position Description:

Purpose

Assist in clinical research studies as part of the Community Brain Injury Research Program in the Department of Neurosurgery’s Center for Neurotrauma Research. The Brain Injury Research Program is a national and international leader of research on traumatic brain injury (TBI). The studies this Research Assistant will support will include work to improve knowledge of: how to detect, diagnose, and classify TBI; how to measure the impact of TBI on patient’s lives; patient perceptions and health disparities; and how to improve systems of care for persons with TBI. The research team collects a variety of data to support the program’s mission, including clinical neuropsychological, blood-based biomarker, and qualitative data.

Primary Functions

  • Collect data from research participants within a civilian TBI population, which might include performing clinical assessments (e.g., interview and questionnaire assessments of symptoms, neuropsychological tests of cognitive functioning), coordinating with research nurses to obtain blood samples from participants, and coding data from patient medical records and qualitative interviews.
  • Process and handle blood biospecimens according to research protocols.
  • Review patient medical charts and call participants to screen for study inclusion/exclusion criteria; coordinate patient visits to MCW or phone visits.
  • Prepare and disseminate survey materials and manage incoming survey data.
  • Order and maintain log of stipend checks and/or gift certificates to be distributed to study participants.
  • Ensure ongoing research activities are compliant with the study protocol and institutional review board (IRB) approval.
  • Provide general clerical support to investigators.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced work environment. Ability to maintain confidentiality. High degree of comfort learning and implementing computer software. Knowledge documentation and records management. Data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.

Minimum Required Education: High school

Minimum Required Experience: 1 year

Preferred Education: Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred Experience:

Field: Psychology, Biology, Neuroscience, Kinesiology, Exercise and Sports Science, Pre-Med

Certification: CITI training within 90 days of hire
