Position Summary Information

General Information
University Advising’s well-respected Madison Advising Peers (MAP) program consists of undergraduate peer advisors who are trained to provide supplemental academic advising for JMU students in conjunction with faculty and full-time academic advisors. Madison Advising Peers are a friendly, supportive and knowledgeable resource for their fellow students and are committed to helping them achieve their college goals. MAPs are selected based on a formal interview, academic record, experience, and attitude. This offer of employment is contingent on budget availability.

This position will work up to 20 hours a week during Summer (mid-May to early August) with the main Madison Advising peers office in SSC 4045, serving all students at JMU .

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist University Advising in welcoming and orienting new students to JMU by answering questions related to enrollment, transfer credit, degree requirements, academic planning, General Education, and similar.
  • Be a resource for incoming students in the summer enrollment lab during both Transfer and First Year Summer Orientation
  • Provide JMU undergraduates with information about university expectations, academic policies, and procedures. This includes reading an academic requirements report; understanding General Education requirements; and declaring a major, minor or pre-professional program.
  • Increase student knowledge of and confidence in utilizing academic advising tools (e.g., MyMadison and course catalog) and campus resources, while making appropriate referrals.
  • Help students understand their role in the academic advising process and how best to work with their faculty or full-time academic advisor.
  • Employ active listening skills to clearly understand student concerns and questions. Demonstrate empathy and respect for students’ right to make their own decisions.

Qualifications
  • Enrollment at JMU for at least one semester, including Fall 2023, at time of application and completion of at least 24 JMU credit hours by Fall 2023.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Availability both to work 10-20 hours per week between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the Summer in person in the main SSC office (SSC 4045)
  • Students must be available to attend in person Summer Orientation labs for both first year and transfer orientation sessions.


Conditions of Employment

Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
