YOUR LIFE AS A SCHOOL TEACHING ASSISTANT

This full-time education position in human services works the day shift during school hours.

As a School Teaching Assistant with our human services nonprofit, you are responsible for supporting students with autism and other developmental disabilities to increase social and emotional skills, communication, and functional academic skills development. Working under the supervision of the classroom teacher, you assist with all educational programming as well as tend to the physical and emotional needs of students. You present segments of lessons and assist the teacher with training other assistants. At times, you also help develop other instructional materials.

Additionally, you compassionately support students who have behavioral issues, which may include physical aggression and verbal assault or inappropriate sexual comments, gestures, and acts. You strive to maintain a strong working knowledge of individual behavioral and educational plans as well as take advantage of a school-wide system of behavioral support. As needed, you complete behavioral documents daily and assist with documenting lesson plans in written form.

You also help organize and oversee extracurricular activities as well as develop and implement vocational, educational, and recreational activities in the community. Throughout the day, you ensure the learning environment is kept safe and clean for students. WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

• Associate degree
• Current and valid NYSED certification as a teacher assistant
• 1+ years of experience working with children with disabilities
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
