What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineering Manager to create, develop, and take on responsibility for state-of-the-art manufacturing processes in one of the most complex and challenging manufacturing environments – Tesla’s Texas and Nevada Gigafactories!
The Tesla Battery Cell Manufacturing Engineering Team is not for the faint of heart, after all, changing the world isn’t easy. It is, however, an opportunity to work alongside some of the industry’s top experts on some of the most stimulating challenges of the 21st Century. In addition to developing manufacturing processes, this specific role is responsible for leading cross-functional teams throughout the manufacturing line lifecycle.
This specific role is responsible for leading cross-functional teams throughout Tesla’s battery cell electrode group. This newest member of Manufacturing Engineering will be in lockstep with our Design for Manufacturability team, Product Excellence (Quality), Production Engineering, Production, and New Product Introduction (NPI) to take new manufacturing designs and manufacturing process from initial concept, through prototype development, and into full production. As such, we expect this person to take pride in their hands-on work, analytical ability, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
Important Note: This person will initially join Tesla at our Gigafactory Austin location in Texas, but will transition to our Gigafactory Nevada location in mid 2024 to support our cell production growth there. Candidate must be open to this location transition.
What You’ll Do
Leadership:
  • Clearly define expectations for the engineering team which improve overall MFG solutions
  • Drive line development activities from inceptions through closure using the engineering resources on their team
  • Focus on cost of manufacturing reductions in CapEx, BOM, and cost of manufacturing
  • Innovate processes and procedures to improve Gigafactory Texas operations
  • Focus on growth and development of the engineering team
  • Collaborate with production engineering and controls teams to install and troubleshoot new equipment
  • Use software generated solutions to track activities (engineering and personnel)
  • Maintain detailed component level process documentation, findings, and process manufacturing line development
  • Prepare and present funding approval requests to executive team

Launch:

  • Co-Develop DFMEA and PFMEA Documentation
  • Coordinate site readiness activities with Tesla Factory Design and Construction teams
  • Lead power-on and commissioning activities of new production lines worldwide
  • Manage installation coordination and schedule of new production systems
  • Execute Production Automation Equipment Validation Testing
  • Ramp production lines to achieve aggressive launch schedules
  • Train receiving teams on new production systems
  • Prepare handover documentation for receiving teams
  • Present production line updates on a regular basis to Tesla Executives
What You’ll Bring
  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical Engineering or similar
  • 5+ years of manufacturing engineering experience with accompanying 3+ years of engineering leadership experience. Senior roles available for more experienced candidates.
  • Proficiency in mechanical assembly (tolerance analysis, adhesive bonding, mechanical pressing)
  • Proven problem solver - demonstrated experience of data driven root cause analysis, statistical software (JMP) a plus
  • Track record of success in establishing highly automated manufacturing lines complete with, motion control, PLC programming, and HMI design
  • Experience introducing new equipment and new processes into a production environment
  • Poise and composure working under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
  • Knowledgeable about production quality metrics
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Exemplary analytical ability, organization skills, and attention to detail
