BLH Technologies, Inc. (BLH), in partnership with the National Library of Medicine (NLM), is hosting a remote 12-week Social Media Research and Innovative Engagement paid internship program from September 5, 2023 to November 28, 2023. Interns will work directly with the NLM Office of Engagement and Training (OET) to support a social listening data analysis and categorization project. They will also create a comprehensive presentation of project results, applying effective visual communication and information design principles. Deadline for applications is July 7, 2023.

Fall 2023 Internship

We invite internship applications from candidates enrolled as a junior or senior in a bachelor's program with an interest in library and information science, public health, social science, communications, or other related fields. Candidates from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), and other minority-serving institutions (MSIs) are particularly encouraged to apply.

Interns work independently and as a team to use social listening as a tool to examine reactions to health misinformation and make recommendations for improving health outcomes. Interns will review social media messages and categorize them according to a provided scheme. They will utilize their knowledge of public health, psychology, and/or library science to categorize and evaluate different conversations, themes, and/or keywords related to the health-related topics of interest. Other responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, identifying gaps in effective health communication and media about controversial topics, studying trends, and presenting the research findings. Strong analytical and organizational skills are required.

In addition, interns will explore and apply principles of effective information and presentation design, and innovative engagement strategies to the development of a final report on their social media research.

Expectations from Interns

• Be enrolled in a 4-year undergraduate degree program as a junior or senior

• Have access to a computer and internet connection in order to complete work. BLH will supply access to online programs necessary to complete the project.
• Report work progress to assigned supervisor; contribute to reports and presentations as tasked.
• Commitment to work 8-12 hours per week between September 5 and November 28, 2023.
