Job Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive program of guidance to school assigned. Provide a proactive, developmental guidance program to encourage all students to maximize personal growth and development.


QUALIFICATIONS
:


Education/Certification:

  • A master’s degree in guidance and counseling
  • Valid Texas Counselor certificate


Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications that the board may find appropriate and acceptable


Experience:

  • Three years’ teaching experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Teach school developmental guidance curriculum to students.
  • Help teachers incorporate guidance-related information into existing curriculum.
  • Provide guidance to individuals and groups of students to develop educational plans and career awareness.
  • Counseling individuals and small groups about their concerns.
  • Provide orientation for new students to the school.
  • Assist students with school adjustment, class expectations, and work habits, through referrals from administration and staff.
  • Plans and presents group guidance programs and activities that promote career education.
  • Maintains and interprets current information about higher education and requirements needed for entrance, special training, and occupational fields.
  • Assist the 8th grade counselor in pre-registration procedures.
  • Serve on and help to coordinate a high school guidance advisory committee.
  • Participate in scheduling process by counseling students relative to academic plans and courses to be taken prior to actual scheduling.
  • Provide necessary registration forms and information for college entrance exams.
  • Provide high school orientation for freshmen students and parents.
  • Counsel and register new high school students.
  • Provide information concerning financial aid and scholarships for higher education.
  • Consult and cooperate with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
  • Work with school personnel and school district residents to obtain resources for students.
  • Use an effective referral process to help students and others use special programs and services such as special education, 504, ESL, dyslexia, gifted and talented, alternative education and community services.
  • Serve on Educational Alternatives Committee as the facilitator and on Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee as a consultant.
  • Confer with students who are withdrawing from or dropping out of school.
  • Conduct a conference with seniors to check graduation requirements.
  • Participate in planning, administration and evaluation of campus standardized testing program.
  • Interpret test and other appraisal results appropriately.
  • Interpret test results with students, teachers, and parents as requested.
  • Makes referrals and acts as liaison to outside agencies as appropriate.
  • Testing:
  • Coordinate and implement necessary testing program as required for total guidance program.
  • Interpret test results to students and parents on request.
  • Confer with teachers concerning utilization of test results.
  • Provides guidance sessions and/or materials for juniors and seniors on taking the ACT, PSAT and SAT as requested.
  • Assist department chairpersons in the proper placement of students.
  • Keep state-mandated tests and/or results secure.
  • Plan school guidance and counseling programs to ensure that they meet identified needs.
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of guidance program and make changes based on
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, budgets and other documents required.
  • Plan, evaluate, and implement a guidance program for school assigned.
  • Determine guidance priorities, set short and long range goals related to priorities, and formulate program objective including procedure for implementation.
  • Coordinate the school’s guidance program with other school related programs and community
  • Work with other counselors to coordinate a district wide counseling program.
  • Assist in coordination of crisis plan for building when the need for implementation arises.
  • Coordinate efforts of college, vocational school, and military recruiters concerning the contacting of students while at school.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in guidance and counseling area.
  • Review and make recommendations concerning the high school handbook policies to keep standards
  • Keep the principal or supervisor informed.
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Participate in professional development and in-service programs.
  • Exemplify high standards of ethical conduct.
  • Display tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for and criticism of job performance.
  • Work in harmony with supervisory, faculty, and peer personnel.
  • Use professional information discreetly and judiciously.
  • Support and follow administrative and board policy.
  • Represent the school system to the community in a positive, professional way.
  • Maintain a sincere, friendly attitude toward patrons.
  • Perform such other professional duties as may be directed by the building principal.

Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks; media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment.


Terms of Employment:


Work year established by the board; salary according to current schedule.


Evaluation:


Performance of this job will be evaluated annually.
